Ahead of Monsoon Session, Lok Sabha Issues Advisory on Smart Watches and Smart Glasses
Ahead of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, the Lok Sabha Secretariat has advised Members of Parliament (MPs) not to use smart devices such as smart watches and smart spectacles in any manner that could compromise security, privacy or parliamentary privileges within the Parliament Estate.
The advisory comes as the Monsoon Session is scheduled to begin on July 20 and continue until August 13.
Advisory issued to MPs
In a bulletin issued on Wednesday, the Lok Sabha Secretariat said advanced electronic devices are now widely available and some of them have features that could pose concerns inside Parliament.
“Members are aware that a large number of advanced devices such as smart spectacles/ pen cameras/ smart watches etc. are now widely available in the country. Some of these devices can be used in ways so as to compromise privacy of Members and breach parliamentary privileges," the bulletin said.
The Secretariat urged MPs to exercise caution while using such devices inside the Parliament Estate.
Security and privacy concerns
According to the advisory, members have been requested not to use smart devices in any manner that could affect the security, privacy or privileges of fellow MPs.
The Secretariat specifically referred to devices such as smart spectacles, pen cameras and smart watches while issuing the advisory. It said these gadgets have capabilities that may be used in ways that are inconsistent with the security and functioning of Parliament.
The advisory applies across the Parliament Estate and asks members to ensure that the use of such devices does not compromise the privacy of other MPs or lead to any breach of parliamentary privileges.
Monsoon Session from July 20
The advisory has been issued ahead of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, which is set to commence on July 20. The session will continue until August 13, during which both Houses of Parliament are expected to conduct legislative business.
With the session approaching, the Lok Sabha Secretariat has reminded members to remain mindful of the potential risks associated with advanced electronic devices.
The bulletin emphasised that while smart gadgets have become increasingly common, their use within the Parliament Estate should not undermine security arrangements, the privacy of Members, or the privileges associated with parliamentary proceedings.
