Norway's Klaebo Completes Golden Sweep At Milano-Cortina, Sets Winter Olympics Record

Klaebo won his sixth gold at the 2026 Winter Olympics, breaking Eric Heiden’s record. Norway swept the podium, and Klaebo now holds 11 Olympic golds, a Winter Games record.

Johannes Høsflot Klæbo sealed a historic clean sweep on Saturday, winning his sixth gold medal of the Games in the 50km mass start to set a new record for the most golds by one athlete at a single Winter Olympics.

The Norwegian star shattered the nearly 50-year mark set by American speed skater Eric Heiden, who won five golds at the 1980 Winter Olympics.

While two of Klæbo’s six titles came in team events, meaning Heiden’s record for individual golds still stands, the achievement cements the 28-year-old’s place in Olympic history.

Norwegian Domination

It was a podium sweep for Norway.

Martin Løwstrøm Nyenget claimed silver, while Emil Iversen took bronze after the trio broke away early and steadily widened the gap on the chasing pack.

On the final lap, Nyenget and Klæbo surged uphill, dropping Iversen. Klæbo bided his time in second before launching a trademark attack on the last climb, powering clear to secure gold.

As he crossed the line, Klæbo pointed skyward, took one stride past the finish and collapsed onto the snow in celebration.

A Growing Legacy

The victory extends Klæbo’s career Olympic gold tally to 11 across three Games: the most ever by a Winter Olympian, surpassing the previous mark of eight.

Only swimming legend Michael Phelps, with 23 Olympic golds, has more across all sports.

Klæbo’s triumph also delivered Norway its 18th gold medal of the Games, a new national record for a single Winter Olympics, and pushed the country’s overall medal haul to 40.
