A former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP has sparked controversy in Rajasthan after allegedly denying blankets to members of the Muslim community during a charitable distribution drive.

Sukhbir Singh Jaunapuria, who was elected to the Lok Sabha in 2014 and 2019, justified his action by saying the blankets were not meant for people who “abuse" Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The incident took place in Tonk district, where Jaunapuria was conducting a free blanket distribution programme in a village.

A video of the episode has since gone viral on social media. In the footage, Jaunapuria is seen addressing a gathering of beneficiaries after noticing the presence of a few Muslim individuals. He refused to distribute blankets to them and also directed that blankets already given to members of the minority community be taken back.

In the viral video, he is heard saying: “Jo Modi ko gaali dene wala hain, usko lene kaa haq hi nahi hain. (Those who abuse Modi, are undeserving of this)." He also indicated that it would not concern him if anyone felt hurt by his decision.

Jaunapuria also reportedly showed displeasure toward his supporters for bringing members of the Muslim community to the event. When some villagers objected to his conduct, he maintained that the blanket distribution was not a government programme but an initiative funded by him personally, and said he had the discretion to decide who would receive the aid.

Jaunapuria represented the Tonk-Sawai Madhopur constituency in the Lok Sabha for two consecutive terms. As part of his philanthropic work, the BJP leader has been running a free canteen for the underprivileged for the past nine years, an initiative that was once praised by Narendra Modi during an episode of his radio programme Mann Ki Baat.
