Hull City’s red-hot run hit an unexpected roadblock, and not just because of Bristol City — but rather a nutty pest.
After winning four of their previous five to muscle into the Championship play-off places, Sergey Jakirovic’s side stumbled to a bruising 3-2 home defeat at the MKM Stadium, as Bristol City bounced back in style from last week’s 5-0 hammering by Derby.
Hull started on script. Oli McBurnie, continuing his fine form, opened the scoring after 24 minutes following a neat one-two with Regan Slater. At that point, the Tigers looked ready to roll.
Then Bristol City flipped the game on its head.
Rob Atkinson powered home an equaliser from a corner in the 33rd minute before Ross McCrorie struck just six minutes later, capitalising on defensive chaos to put the visitors 2-1 up at the break. Hull never really recovered.
Any hopes of a reset after half-time were crushed five minutes in. Former Tiger Scott Twine sliced Hull open with a gorgeous through-ball, and Emil Riis kept his nerve to make it 3-1.
Then came the chaos.
Play was twice halted by a rogue squirrel sprinting across the pitch, sending stewards into farcical pursuit and briefly stealing the spotlight.
Hull, meanwhile, tried to use the interruption as a lifeline.
Kieran Dowell’s close-range volley in the 78th minute gave the hosts a glimmer of hope, but Bristol City held firm to see out a deserved win.
Gerhard Struber’s side were the sharper team for long stretches, refusing to sit deep despite last week’s humiliation. They pressed, passed with confidence, and punished Hull’s mistakes ruthlessly.
Hull threw on fresh legs, pushed late, and enjoyed plenty of possession, but it wasn’t enough.
The play-off chase took a dent, while Bristol City walked away with momentum, belief, and three points.
