Pakistan confirms Iran has responded to US peace proposal amid West Asia

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday confirmed that Iran has sent its response to a US-backed peace proposal aimed at easing tensions in West Asia, as diplomatic efforts continue to hold together a delicate ceasefire in the region.

Pakistan has been playing a mediating role between Washington and Tehran at a time when the conflict has disrupted movement through the Strait of Hormuz and triggered concerns in global oil and energy markets. Speaking at an event commemorating one year since Pakistan’s last military conflict with India, Sharif revealed that Iran’s reply had been received through official channels.

“Right now, the Field Marshal [Asim Munir] informed me that we have received Iran’s response. I cannot share further details at this stage,” Sharif said during his address.

Earlier reports in Iranian media suggested that Tehran had handed over its response to Pakistan, which then passed it on to the United States.

The ongoing crisis began after joint military strikes by the US and Israel on Iran on February 28, followed by retaliatory action from Tehran. Although both sides agreed to a ceasefire on April 8, tensions have continued to simmer beneath the surface.

Pakistan hosted a round of direct negotiations between Iran and the US on April 11, but the discussions ended without a breakthrough. Key disagreements reportedly remain over Iran’s nuclear enrichment programme and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil shipping route.

On April 21, US President Donald Trump decided to extend the ceasefire indefinitely beyond its original two-week timeline, allowing negotiators additional time to work toward a possible agreement with Tehran.

Meanwhile, regional security concerns remain elevated. The United Arab Emirates and Kuwait recently reported drone activity in their airspace, while a drone strike near the coast of Qatar caused a small fire on a commercial vessel.

According to an Associated Press report, the latest US proposal is focused on ending the conflict, restoring safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, and reducing Iran’s nuclear activities as part of a broader de-escalation effort.
