The West Bengal Police’s Special Task Force (STF) has uncovered an major Pakistan-linked conspiracy to target the state’s Chief Minister, honey-trap the son of a senior politician from Howrah, and create disturbances during the recent student protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi.

The revelations came after the arrest of Hamim Mondal, described by police as a suspected Jaish-e-Mohammed operative, and his alleged associate Arpita Sarkar.

According to police, Sarkar was arrested from Sahibganj in Jharkhand on Friday and brought to Bardhaman in West Bengal. Police said she is Mondal’s close associate and girlfriend.

Intel input

The STF said it first received intelligence suggesting there was a plan to extort a senior politician from Howrah and honey-trap and kidnap his son.

While tracking the lead, investigators identified suspicious online activity linked to a handle operating from Sahibganj in the name of Arpita Sarkar. Police said they began monitoring her activities while simultaneously securing the intended target, alerting local police and ensuring his safety.

During surveillance, investigators found that Sarkar was in close contact with Hamim Mondal, who earlier lived in Pilkhana in Howrah but had recently shifted to Bardhaman. Mondal was taken into custody from Renaissance Residency in Bardhaman on the night of July 31.

Pakistan-linked online handles under scanner

According to the STF, interrogation of Mondal and technical analysis revealed that he had been communicating with several online handles, including Rana, Uzair and Abir Jat 333.

Police said the interactions began on Instagram around two months ago before shifting to WhatsApp and encrypted platforms such as Telegram, Session and Element X.

The STF alleged that these handles were being operated from Pakistan and were linked to the Shahzad Bhatti gang. According to investigators, the network was involved in spreading radical propaganda and targeting young people in an attempt to recruit them for subversive activities.

Plots against CM, Jantar Mantar protest

The STF claimed its investigation revealed a terror plot to target the Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. According to police, communication records indicated that Mondal had been tasked with studying the Chief Minister’s movements and identifying locations where he could be vulnerable or unguarded.

Investigators also claimed they found communication relating to the recent student protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. According to the STF, Mondal was allegedly asked to arrange a police uniform and create some form of disturbance or sabotage during the protest.

Police further alleged that discussions also included targeting certain police personnel and political leaders, and that the operation involved radical propaganda and attempts to brainwash individuals.

Role of Arpita Sarkar under investigation

The STF said that Mondal was being influenced by foreign handlers and was actively involved in identifying a senior minister from Howrah as a target. Police claimed he was also trying to honey-trap the minister’s son using Arpita Sarkar.

According to investigators, evidence of Sarkar’s communication with the alleged foreign handlers has been found.

Police said Mondal and Sarkar had known each other for nearly four years after meeting through Instagram. They later met in person, and investigators described their relationship as an affair. The STF alleged that in recent months Mondal had been trying to involve Sarkar in the activities of the alleged network.

The STF said it is examining possible funding links from Pakistan by analysing bank accounts. It added that the investigation is continuing and further details will be shared after verification. Police also said Hamim Mondal’s background remains under investigation and no further conclusions can be drawn at this stage.
