The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has publicly voiced its frustration over the Congress leadership’s failure to announce a Chief Minister even more than a week after the United Democratic Front (UDF) secured a sweeping victory in the Kerala Assembly elections.

Speaking in Malappuram on Monday, IUML district general secretary P Abdul Hameed said the delay and the apparent tussle over the top post were overshadowing the alliance’s victory.

“The situation has brought embarrassment to the UDF. People are beginning to ask why they voted for the alliance," Hameed said, according to a report in The Hindu.

Public Dissatisfaction Growing, Says IUML Leader

He claimed that dissatisfaction among the public was growing rapidly and that party workers were increasingly facing uncomfortable questions from supporters.

“People are openly expressing their dissatisfaction to us. Questions are being raised from all quarters," he added.

According to Hameed, discussions over the leadership issue had become widespread across the state. “Wherever you go, people are talking about it: at street corners, marriage functions and even at funerals," he remarked, the report mentioned.

The IUML leader said the uncertainty was also affecting public enthusiasm for newly elected legislators. He claimed that reception events organised for MLA-designates were seeing low turnout because of the delay in choosing the Chief Minister.

“The sole reason is the delay in choosing the Chief Minister," he said.

UDF Victory ‘Losing Its Shine’: Hameed

Hameed also dismissed Congress leaders’ attempts to defend the delay by drawing comparisons with the BJP’s delay in naming a Chief Minister in Delhi.

“Such explanations may work elsewhere, but not in Kerala. People here are politically informed and highly engaged. They understand exactly what is happening. You cannot convince them with such excuses," he said.

He added that IUML workers had played a crucial role in the UDF’s success, especially in Malappuram district, but warned that the ongoing leadership uncertainty was damaging the coalition’s victory momentum.
