PIB Debunks Misleading Video Claiming Rajnath Singh Threatened Student Protesters

The PIB clarified that the Defence Minister had not made any such remarks regarding the ongoing student protests in the national capital.

A Pakistani propaganda network falsely circulated an AI-generated video claiming that Defence Minister Rajnath Singh made threatening remarks against student protesters, according to a fact-check issued by the Press Information Bureau (PIB).

The PIB Fact Check Unit debunked the claim as fake and said that the viral clip was artificially generated and was being circulated by Pakistani propaganda accounts as part of a disinformation campaign to mislead the public.

The Fact Check Unit also shared the original, unedited video of the Defence Minister to counter the misleading claims circulating online.

In a post on X, the PIB clarified that the Defence Minister had not made any such remarks regarding the ongoing student protests in the national capital.

“The video is fake and AI-generated. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh did not make any such statement regarding the Delhi protest," the Fact Check Unit said.

The PIB also urged people not to share unverified content and advised citizens to report suspicious posts related to the Government of India to the PIB Fact Check Unit. It further asked the public to rely only on official sources for authentic information.

What Rajnath Singh Said

Earlier on Wednesday, the Defence Minister that the government would ensure “nothing unfair" is done to students as he sought to reassure those protesting over the paper leak controversy linked to the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET-UG) 2026.

Singh accused the opposition parties of “attempting to use the students as a political tool". In a post on X, he said, “The ongoing protests in Delhi are a matter of serious concern. It is extremely unfortunate that some people are attempting to use the students and youth of our country as a political tool to fulfill their political interests."

Rajnath Singh asserted that the government is committed to ensuring justice and fairness to all, especially the students and youth. He alleged that a “manufactured sense of anger" was merely a failed attempt by some opposition leaders to “mislead" the public.

What’s Happening In Delhi?

Students from across the country and activists of Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), an online satirical collective, have been protesting at Jantar Mantar and others parts of Central Delhi demanding accountability for repeated examination paper leaks and also seeking resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

The protestors had planned to march to the parliament house on Monday but the Delhi Police intervened and prevented the same.

The protest witnessed clashes, tear gas shelling, allegations of excessive force by police, counter-allegations of violence by protesters, detentions, and widespread disruption across central Delhi.

Police said the crowd turned violent, leading to stone-pelting, attacks on police personnel and damage to public property. According to Delhi Police, 178 people were injured in the clashes, including 118 police personnel and around 60 protesters. On the other hand, the CJP claimed that police resorted to lathi-charge and tear gas against peaceful demonstrators, resulting in injuries to hundreds of protesters.
