A day after former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot renewed his criticism of Congress colleague Sachin Pilot, sources close to Pilot said on Monday that the Congress leader would not respond to the remarks and would instead remain focused on public issues.
According to the sources, Pilot has chosen to maintain a “dignified silence" and concentrate on matters such as the NEET paper leak controversy, the CBSE row, inflation and the Rajasthan government’s performance, PTI reported.
The sources said Pilot has consistently avoided engaging in personal attacks despite repeated criticism from Gehlot over the years. The sources also said that Pilot is concentrating on cornering the Bhajanlal Sharma government in Rajasthan as two-and-a-half years have passed since it took charge, yet several of its promises remain “unfulfilled".
What Gehlot Said
The latest exchange follows Gehlot’s comments on Sunday regarding the political turmoil that engulfed Rajasthan Congress in September 2022. Gehlot said the episode was not a revolt against the party high command but opposition among MLAs to the possibility of Pilot becoming chief minister.
2022 Rajasthan Leadership Crisis
A Congress Legislature Party meeting had been convened in Jaipur on September 25, 2022, to pass a one-line resolution authorising the Congress president to decide on the state’s leadership. However, several MLAs loyal to Gehlot skipped the meeting and gathered at the residence of then minister Shanti Dhariwal, preventing the resolution from being passed.
Gehlot said, “There can never be a revolt against the party high command," and argued that the resistance was directed at Pilot, whom he claimed was unacceptable to many legislators because he had “led the rebellion" against the government in 2020.
Sources close to Pilot said he remains focused on holding the BJP government in Rajasthan accountable, claiming that several promises made by the Bhajanlal Sharma administration remain unfulfilled more than two years after it came to power.
They also recalled that Pilot had accepted the party leadership’s advice to move on from past disputes. “I was asked to forgive and forget and move on, which is exactly what I did. That was the need of the hour for the party and the state," he had said earlier.
