Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday concluded his visit to the UAE and departed for the Netherlands, marking the second leg of his five-nation diplomatic tour aimed at deepening India’s engagement with Europe and the Gulf region.
During his stop in Abu Dhabi, PM Modi held talks with UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, with discussions focused on energy cooperation, trade, investments and regional developments, according to the Ministry of External Affairs.
Following the UAE visit, PM Modi will travel across the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway and Italy over the next several days, where he is scheduled to meet key European leaders and royalty as part of efforts to expand India’s strategic and economic partnerships.
In the Netherlands, PM Modi will hold talks with Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten and meet King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima.
Discussions are expected to centre on semiconductors, green hydrogen, innovation, defence cooperation and water management.
The Prime Minister will then visit Sweden on May 17-18 for bilateral talks with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.
PM Modi and Kristersson are also expected to jointly address the European Round Table for Industry alongside European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Talks in Sweden are likely to focus on artificial intelligence, emerging technologies, green transition and building resilient supply chains.
In Norway, PM Modi will participate in the third India-Nordic Summit in Oslo on May 19 and hold bilateral discussions with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre. Leaders from Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Sweden are also expected to attend the summit.
The final leg of Modi’s tour will take him to Italy on May 19-20, where he will be hosted by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
The visit is expected to focus on strengthening defence, energy and economic cooperation under the India-Italy Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025-2029.
Officials said the broader tour is aimed at reinforcing India’s partnerships with Europe across sectors such as technology, clean energy, innovation and trade, particularly following the recent conclusion of the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement negotiations.
