The ₹22,516-crore plant near Ahmedabad to generate 5,000 direct jobs and produce high-performance memory chips for global AI applications

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate Micron Technology’s state-of-the-art ATMP (Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging) facility in Sanand, Gujarat, on 28 February. Initially expected to start production by late 2024, the plant near Ahmedabad is now slated to roll out high-performance memory and storage chips for AI and advanced computing.

Micron Semiconductor Technology India Pvt. Ltd. has invested ₹22,516 crore in the facility, which is expected to generate 5,000 direct jobs, including opportunities for Divyang (specially-abled) citizens as operators and technicians. Currently, 2,000 team members are working to prepare the plant for commercial production, an official release from the Gujarat government stated.

The Sanand ATMP plant will produce DRAM and NAND products, including SSD solid-state drives, for the global market. These chips are essential for artificial intelligence (AI) systems, which require high-speed memory and storage for real-time processing. According to Sanjay Mehrotra, Chairman, President and CEO of Micron Technology, “Memory and storage are central to today’s technology, particularly in the AI field. As AI continues to deliver faster responses, the demand for advanced memory solutions is steadily increasing.”

The facility receives DRAM and NAND wafers from Micron’s global factories and converts them into finished memory products. Chips undergo assembly, testing for speed and capacity, marking, and packaging before being shipped worldwide.
