Manchester City overcame the absence of Erling Haaland to move within two points of Premier League leaders Arsenal with a 1-0 victory at Leeds on Saturday, while Liverpool defeated West Ham 5-2 to rise to fifth place.

Haaland was sidelined for the visit to his birthplace due to a minor injury that Pep Guardiola described as “not a big problem".

Without the Norwegian striker, City were not at their best but managed to secure a crucial three points against a Leeds team that had lost only twice in their previous 16 games.

Leeds regretted not capitalising on their early dominance as Dominic Calvert-Lewin missed a golden opportunity just three minutes into the match.

Antoine Semenyo emerged as the match-winner with his sixth goal in 11 games since joining City last month.

“It was a huge victory to stay in the race," said Guardiola, whose team and Arsenal are still competing in four tournaments. “One game at a time. Recover now and start the real season when there are many, many games and everyone’s tired."

Tempers flared at full-time as Leeds boss Daniel Farke received a red card for confronting referee Peter Bankes, while Guardiola was also furious with the officials.

The pressure is now on Arsenal to respond when they host Chelsea in Sunday’s marquee match.

Everton secured another excellent away win to keep their European football hopes alive with a 3-2 victory at Newcastle.

The Toffees led three times at St James’ Park through Jarrad Branthwaite, Beto, and Thierno Barry.

Everton have struggled to adapt to their new home at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, but only Arsenal have won more points on the road, with David Moyes’ men climbing to eighth place.

Bournemouth extended their unbeaten league run to eight games by coming from behind to salvage a 1-1 draw at home to Sunderland in the lunchtime kick-off.
