Punjab Kings qualification scenario: Can Punjab Kings still qualify for IPL 2026 playoffs after dismal loss to RCB?

Punjab Kings' exasperating losing run extends to six as the team failed to pull off the highest successful chase at the HPCA ground in Dharamshala on Sunday. Batting first, Royal Challengers Bengaluru posted a massive total of 222/4 in 20 overs. Virat Kohli and Venkatesh Iyer emerged as the standout performers with the bat for RCB. Chasing 223, PBKS lost their way early in the innings as the team's top run-getters Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran Singh, and captain Shreyas Iyer fell cheaply inside the powerplay. Shashank Singh put up a fight for PBKS, but his knock of 56 off 27 proved to be nothing more than a valiant effort. Punjab eventually folded at 199 at the loss of eight wickets in 20 overs, losing the match by 23 runs. Iyer was adjudged the player of the match for scoring 73 off 40. Credit needs to be given to Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who picked up both the PBKS openers and conceded just 38 runs in his four overs.

Can PBKS still qualify for the playoffs?

The loss has jeopardised Punjab Kings' chances to qualify for the playoffs, which is a travesty in itself, as at one point they were looking to become the first team to secure a playoff berth. They are stuck at 13 points after 13 matches, which means even if they win their remaining one game, they will reach 15 points, which is not a qualifying territory.

Nonetheless, all hope is not lost. If they win their left-out game, and teams like Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals fumble in the final games, then PBKS can finish in the top-4 and qualify for the playoffs.

It can be stated that they are no longer the owners of their own fate. If they win, they will reach 15 points, but RR and CSK are in a position to overtake them. Notably, RCB have already qualified for the playoffs, which leaves out three remaining playoff spots. Gujarat Titans have already acquired 16 points, putting them in an ideal position to qualify. To stay in the race and grab one of the two possible spots, Punjab Kings need to win their remaining game, and at the same time would have to hope that SRH, RR, and CSK self-sabotage their chances.
