The suspense over the Congress Chief Minister face in Kerala is intensifying, with multiple senior leaders emerging as strong contenders for the top post.
At the centre of the race are senior Congress leaders KC Venugopal, VD Satheesan and Ramesh Chennithala, each representing different power centres within the party.
VD Satheesan, currently seen as the most aggressive opposition face in Kerala politics, has built a strong grassroots image through his attacks on the ruling Left government. His supporters claim he represents a generational shift and more energetic leadership for the Congress in the state.
KC Venugopal, a close confidant of Rahul Gandhi and one of the most influential organisational leaders in the Congress, is also being viewed as a strong contender because of his national-level role and proximity to the party high command.
Meanwhile, veteran leader Ramesh Chennithala continues to enjoy support from a section of traditional Congress workers and senior leaders because of his long administrative and political experience in Kerala politics.
As the leadership debate intensifies, supporters of all three leaders have started putting up posters and banners across Kerala. Demonstrations in support of VD Satheesan are also being reported from different parts of the state.
However, the biggest political signal is now emerging from social media.
On May 4, Rahul Gandhi shared a Facebook post congratulating the people of Kerala and UDF leaders after the Congress alliance’s victory in the state. But the response to that post has now triggered intense political discussion within Congress circles.
More than 1.83 lakh people have responded to Rahul Gandhi’s Facebook post so far. A majority of the visible replies appear to favour VD Satheesan as the next Chief Minister of Kerala.
Political observers estimate that over one lakh users may have directly demanded that Satheesan be chosen for the Chief Minister’s post, reflecting strong online sentiment in his favour.
The developments suggest that the battle for Kerala’s top post is no longer confined to party meetings and internal lobbying, but has now shifted to social media platforms, where supporters are openly campaigning for their preferred leader.
The big question now is whether the Congress high command will factor in this public sentiment while taking the final decision on Kerala’s next Chief Minister.
The Congress-led UDF secured a commanding 102 out of 140 Assembly seats, marking a historic comeback after a decade and reducing the Left Democratic Front to just 35 seats. Congress alone secured 63 seats.
