Cristiano Ronaldo and Al Nassr were literally seconds away from Saudi Pro League glory.
The title ribbons were almost ready. The celebrations were brewing. History was waiting.
Then came one cruel mistake.
A catastrophic 98th-minute own goal from goalkeeper Bento denied Cristiano Ronaldo and Al Nassr a potentially title-clinching win against fierce rivals Al Hilal on Tuesday, blowing the championship race wide open again.
For Ronaldo, the agony was written all over his face.
The Portuguese superstar, still chasing his first major domestic trophy since arriving in Saudi Arabia in January 2023, cut a devastated figure as the game slipped away in the final seconds. A win would have effectively completed Al Nassr’s long-awaited title mission and ended a six-year wait for the Saudi Pro League crown.
Instead, the night ended in heartbreak.
Al Nassr looked set to seal a massive 1-0 victory before disaster struck deep into stoppage time. Brazil international Bento failed to properly deal with a long throw into the penalty area, awkwardly fumbling the ball into his own net in the 98th minute.
Just moments earlier, the Riyadh giants had one hand on the trophy.
The own goal stunned the entire stadium, and perhaps nobody more than Ronaldo himself. Cameras captured the 41-year-old sitting motionless in the dugout after the final whistle, visibly shattered as teammates attempted to console him.
It was another brutal twist in Ronaldo’s turbulent Saudi journey, where goals have flowed freely but silverware has stubbornly remained out of reach.
To his credit, though, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner quickly regrouped and tried to rally the fans.
Despite the collapse, the title race is still in Al Nassr’s hands.
They remain top of the table on 83 points and can still clinch the Saudi Pro League title if they defeat Damac in their final match of the season.
Al Hilal, meanwhile, must win both of their remaining fixtures and hope Ronaldo’s side slip up one last time.
