Karnataka Lokayukta officials seized Rs 1.70 crore in cash from the flat of a friend of a senior government engineer during raids linked to a disproportionate assets case, officials said on Thursday.

The searches were carried out in connection with H M Janardhana, Superintendent Engineer in the Karnataka Residential Educational Institutions Society.

A case has been registered against him at the Bengaluru Rural Lokayukta Police Station over alleged acquisition of assets beyond his known sources of income.

“In connection with the disproportionate assets case against Janardhana, searches were conducted at six locations. During the search, Rs 1.70 crore in cash was recovered from the flat of his friend, Sujay Shetty," a Lokayukta official said.

Janardhana is reported to own a plot, three houses, 34 acres of agricultural land, gold and silver ornaments worth Rs 7.08 lakh, vehicles worth Rs 20 lakh, and other valuables worth Rs 60 lakh.

The total value of his assets has been estimated at Rs 2.57 crore.

The official added that the search operation is ongoing and further details are being verified.

Earlier, Lokayukta teams conducted simultaneous raids at 29 locations connected to four government officers across Karnataka, including Bengaluru, Davangere, and Dharwad. The raids have uncovered assets worth a total of Rs 23.76 crore.

Besides Janardhana, the officers under investigation include Arjun R H, Assistant Executive Engineer (Civil) at BESCOM, Davangere; Purushotham Das Hegade, Executive Engineer at the Public Works Department; and Somalingappa Fakkirappa Siddanagoudar, Survey Supervisor at the Assistant Director of Land Records’ Office, Dharwad.

Among them, Purushotham was found to have the largest wealth, estimated at Rs 11.29 crore, which includes a plot, two houses, two educational institutions, 11 acres 30 guntas of agricultural land, Rs 44.23 lakh in cash, Rs 60.79 lakh in gold and silver ornaments, and fixed deposits worth Rs 27 lakh.
