Small cap mutual funds: According to the mandate of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), a small cap mutual fund scheme has to invest in companies that rank below the top 250 by market capitalisation. The schemes are also supposed to invest at least 65 per cent of their assets in small cap stocks.
Small companies tend to be more volatile, and their performance is seen to vary over time, compared with large and mid cap firms. Therefore, small cap investment is considered very risky.
The segment is usually highly volatile, especially in the short run. Hence, small-cap schemes are expected to suit only aggressive investors who have the necessary risk tolerance and a reasonable long-term horizon.
