Erasing early losses, equity benchmarks traded with marginal gains in afternoon deals on Monday, with the BSE Sensex and the NSE Nifty 50 inching higher as selective buying in index heavyweights offset weakness in financial and capital market stocks.
After a subdued start, sentiment steadied through the session as investors weighed regulatory developments and global cues, keeping the benchmarks range-bound but in positive territory.
Sensex gained 291.12 pts or 0.35 per cent to 82,917.88 at 1.31 pm after opening at 82,480.40 against the previous close of 82,626.76, and Nifty 50 soared by 98.70 pts or 0.39 per cent to 25,569.80.
During the session, the Sensex had swung by about 706 points, highlighting intraday volatility, whereas the Nifty recorded a gain of roughly 218 points between its day’s low and high levels.
Midcap and smallcap indices edged higher by 0.14 per cent and 0.06 per cent, respectively. Sectoral performance remained mixed, with the realty index advancing about 1 per cent while the auto index declined by a similar margin.
Media and IT stocks also traded lower, whereas private banks, pharma, healthcare, FMCG and metal counters showed resilience.
