It felt inevitable long before the official announcement arrived, but now it’s etched into NBA history: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is the 2025-26 NBA MVP.
Again.

On Sunday, he made history with a second.

The Oklahoma City Thunder superstar secured his second consecutive MVP award on Sunday night, becoming just the 14th player in NBA history to go back-to-back and the latest guard to dominate the league in truly historic fashion.
How SGA Won The MVP
SGA beat out a stacked field that included three-time MVP Nikola Jokic, rising phenom Victor Wembanyama and scoring machine Luka Doncic.

Gilgeous-Alexander received 939 points and 83 first-place votes, comfortably ahead of Jokic’s 634 points and Wembanyama’s 589. Cade Cunningham and Doncic rounded out the top five.
And honestly? The numbers backed it up completely.
The 27-year-old averaged 31.1 points per game while leading Oklahoma City to yet another dominant regular season with 64 wins. A year after averaging a league-best 32.7 points and delivering the franchise a championship, SGA somehow elevated his all-around game even further.
Why SGA Won The MVP
This season, Shai shattered Wilt Chamberlain’s long-standing record for consecutive 20-point games and became the first player since Wilt in 1963-64 to score 20-plus points in every regular-season appearance while playing at least 50 games.
He also joined Michael Jordan as the only guards ever to average 30-plus points on 50 percent shooting across four straight seasons.
Then there’s this absurd stat: SGA became the only guard in NBA history to average over 30 points while shooting above 55 percent from the field.
He also led the NBA in clutch points, won Clutch Player of the Year honors, and posted a league-best +788 plus-minus — over 100 points clear of the next player.

Now, with the Thunder preparing for a Western Conference Finals showdown against the Victor Wembanyama-led San Antonio Spurs, SGA’s focus will be set on ousting the ‘Alien’ and potentially pushing further to become a back-to-back NBA champion.
