Selvan also alleged that some TVK leaders were using Vijay’s popularity and film star image to settle their own political scores with the DMK.

According to VCK general secretary Sinthanai Selvan, TVK workers sent messages on WhatsApp seeking support instead of Vijay personally reaching out.
Amid continuous deadlock over government formation in Tamil Nadu following a fractured verdict in the 234-member Assembly, the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) on Friday hit out at Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay for allegedly trying to seek support through WhatsApp messages rather than having the actor-politician personally contact political leaders to gather majority backing.
In a long post on X, VCK general secretary Sinthanai Selvan launched a blistering critique of TVK and Vijay’s handling of post-election developments and said that Vijay should have acted with utmost caution.
“In a scenario where a clear majority to form the government was not secured, he should have acted with utmost caution. Shouldn’t Vijay have met in person with the political party leaders he wishes to seek support from right away?" he said in a post on X.
He questioned whether Vijay is personally faltering in managing the “abnormal" post-poll situation or whether second-rung leaders around him are misleading him.
“Whether TVK is faltering in handling the extraordinary post-election situation, or if the second-rung leaders around him are leading him astray. Shouldn’t he have openly discussed not falling into the trap of second-rung leaders, and the necessity of preventing the BJP from entering Tamil Nadu through the Governor’s route? How are we to understand sending a letter via WhatsApp asking for support and then saying “respond"?" Selvan added.
The VCK general secretary further accused some leaders of the TVK of displaying arrogance after the election results and criticised statements mattacking the DMK and speaking in a “vengeful tone" instead of adopting a conciliatory approach needed for coalition-building.
He further mocked TVK’s criticism of “dynastic politics," pointing out the contradiction of simultaneously seeking support from parties allied with the Congress.
“After victory, without sharpening pre-election contradictions, Mr. Vijay should have handled matters with great magnanimity to earn the goodwill of all leaders. But is it right that the very moment the victory news arrived, he revealed arrogance and a vengeful mindset by declaring it the day the era of monarchy has ended?" he said.
“Is there any greater irony than joining hands with the Congress- which bears the burden of dynastic politics through Motilal Nehru, Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and so on into the fifth generation- and then speaking of dynastic politics? After branding DMK as an abolished monarchy and then forming an alliance under DMK leadership to win, what logic or justification is there in unhesitatingly seeking support from the leftists and VCK without any qualms?" he added.
Selvan further noted that Vijay, who should be keeping his MLAs united through political understanding and personal affection, has instead revived “resort politics" by confining legislators – a move he described as “not commendable".
The VCK leader also strongly criticised alleged comments by some TVK members who claimed that VCK workers inside the party were acting like “sleeper cells".
“Only around 20 people in the VCK, including Thiruma, are actually from the party. Everyone else belongs to us. So how can they be called sleeper cells?" he said.
Selvan also alleged that some TVK leaders were using Vijay’s popularity and film star image to settle their own political scores with the DMK, while keeping Vijay himself politically cut off.
He further criticised TVK for moving its MLAs to resorts after the elections, saying the party had brought “resort politics" back to Tamil Nadu.
Warning about a possible political crisis, Selvan claimed that the BJP was trying to create conditions for Governor’s rule in the state and appealed to the people of Tamil Nadu to stay alert against any attempt to bypass democratic processes.
“Mr. Vijay must immediately realize that the wrong approaches and misguided advice from those around him are the very things blocking the path for support to reach him. Sensing the danger in this situation where BJP @BJP4TamilNadu is attempting to impose Governor’s rule by violating all democratic norms, and stopping it to protect Tamil Nadu—that is the challenge before the people." he added.
What’s Happening In Tamil Nadu?
His remarks came following a fractured verdict in the 234-member Assembly, where TVK emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats but fell short of the majority mark of 118. The DMK secured 59 seats, while the AIADMK won 47. Congress, which shifted support to TVK after the results, has five MLAs. However, TVK’s effective tally stands at 112 after accounting for the legal requirement for Vijay to resign from one of the two seats he contested and won.
However, any such move is likely to depend heavily on the stand taken by the Left parties and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), which have two MLAs each. These parties now hold the balance in the government formation exercise, with both the TVK and AIADMK camps attempting to secure their backing.
Why Is Vijay Not Able To Form Government?
Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar on Thursday once again declined TVK chief Vijay’s claim to form the government, saying the party had still not shown enough support to prove a majority in the Assembly.
During the meeting at Lok Bhavan, the Governor asked the actor-turned-politician whether his claim was based only on the expectation that smaller parties might support him later. He also raised concerns about the stability of such a government.
TVK emerged as the single largest party in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly with 108 seats, but it is still short of the 118 seats needed for a majority. Since Vijay won from two constituencies, he will have to vacate one seat, reducing the party’s effective strength to 107. With the support of five Congress MLAs, the alliance stands at 112, still six short of the majority mark of 118 in the 234-member assembly.
As a result, TVK now needs support from other parties or independents to reach the majority mark.
