Six died, 12 injured due to strong winds in Sangli

Six devotees died, and 12 others were injured after a wall collapsed due to strong winds near the Shri Margubai Devi temple in Jat taluka in Maharashtra’s Sangli district, police said on Wednesday (May 13, 2026). 

The incident occurred on Tuesday (May 11) in the evening, around 5 p.m., as every Tuesday and Friday, a huge yatra is held in the Margubai temple area in Motewadi village in Jat. Taluka. Hundreds of devotees from the eastern part of Jat and the Domanal and Kalgi areas of Karnataka come for darshan. According to police, when strong winds and heavy rainfall started, the devotees took shelter under a thatched shed near the temple. 

“After sometime, the sheets of the shed uprooted, the force of wind hit the wall built of bricks, it collapsed and injured the devotees. The rescue team reach the spot immediately along with emergency help,” said Sangli police officer. 

The injured have been shifted to Sankh Primary Health Centre and private hospitals. Among the injured, one is critical, Sangli police said on Wednesday (May 13). 

The deceased are identified as Kondiba Gagege (65), Shankar Aba Lokhande (80), Mangal Bhauso Mote (45), Arun Viju Gagege (13) Sonya Laxman Chavan (14), and Sangeeta Ramchandra Chaudhary (40) died in this accident.
