Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday invoked India’s “civilisational freedom" and resilience while addressing the Somnath Amrut Mahotsav celebrations in Gujarat, saying the reconstruction of the Somnath Temple after Independence symbolised the country’s spiritual and cultural resurgence.
Addressing the gathering at Prabhas Patan after performing rituals at the temple and releasing a commemorative stamp and coin to mark 75 years of the temple’s reconstruction, PM Modi said the consecration of Somnath in 1951 was not merely a religious event but a declaration of “India’s spirit of independence".
The Prime Minister also linked the Somnath narrative to India’s political resolve, scientific progress and national pride, referring to the Pokhran nuclear tests of 1998, Chandrayaan’s “Shiv Shakti Point", and what he described as repeated attempts by “invaders" to destroy Somnath.
He said the temple’s repeated reconstruction reflected the enduring strength of Indian civilisation.
