Domestic equity markets are closed today, Thursday, December 25, on account of the Christmas holiday. Trading on both the bourses -- the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) -- will remain suspended across segments. It marks the final trading holiday for Indian markets in 2025. Normal trading activity will resume on Friday.

Are commodity markets also closed?

Commodity markets are also shut, with the Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) and the National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX) closed for both the morning and evening sessions.

How many trading holidays in 2025

Domestic equity markets observed a total of 14 trading holidays during the year. With Christmas being the last non-trading day, investors and traders will now see uninterrupted sessions until the year-end.

Several major global markets are also observing Christmas-related holidays. US markets will close early today and reopen on December 26. While markets in Germany will remain closed for the full day on December 24 and 25, while those in the UK, France and Australia will operate with an early close on December 24.

NSE releases equity market holiday calendar for 2026

Meanwhile, the National Stock Exchange has released the official equity market trading holiday calendar for 2026, providing investors and traders early visibility on non-trading days. The schedule, notified under NSE exchange bye-laws and F&O regulations, lists 15 full trading holidays during the year, one more than in 2025, along with holidays that fall on weekends.

Equity, equity derivatives and currency derivatives markets will remain closed on the following days in 2026:

  • January 26 (Monday): Republic Day
  • March 3 (Tuesday): Holi
  • March 26 (Thursday): Shri Ram Navami
  • March 31 (Tuesday): Shri Mahavir Jayanti
  • April 3 (Friday): Good Friday
  • April 14 (Tuesday): Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Jayanti
  • May 1 (Friday): Maharashtra Day
  • May 28 (Thursday): Bakri Id
  • June 26 (Friday): Muharram
  • September 14 (Monday): Ganesh Chaturthi
  • October 2 (Friday): Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti
  • October 20 (Tuesday): Dussehra
  • November 10 (Tuesday): Diwali–Balipratipada
  • November 24 (Tuesday): Prakash Gurpurb Sri Guru Nanak Dev
  • December 25 (Friday): Christmas

The NSE calendar has released lists the following holidays that fall on Saturdays or Sundays, and hence do not result in additional trading holidays:

  • August 15 (Saturday): Independence Day
  • November 8 (Sunday): Diwali Laxmi Pujan
