As the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) celebrates its strong performance in the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections, one leader has emerged at the centre of the political conversation- VD Satheesan. Seen as the architect of the UDF’s revival in the state, Satheesan is now widely being discussed as a leading contender for the Chief Minister’s post.

The 2026 election marked a major turnaround in Kerala politics. After years of electoral setbacks, the UDF finally managed to regain momentum against the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF). Satheesan played a key role in this victory.

He shaped the alliance’s campaign and political standing. According to the experts, his aggressive attacks on the state government, combined with issue-based politics and organisational discipline, helped the Congress-led alliance reconnect with voters across Kerala.

Who Is VD Satheesan?

Born in Nettoor in Ernakulam district, Vadassery Damodaran Satheesan entered politics through student activism. He was actively involved in campus politics at S H College, Thevara, and later at Mahatma Gandhi University. His rise through the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) gave him early organisational exposure within the Congress party.

Before becoming a full-time politician, Satheesan practised law at the Kerala High Court. His electoral debut from the Paravur Assembly constituency in the 1990s ended in defeat, but he quickly recovered politically. Over the years, he transformed Paravur into a Congress stronghold and went on to win five consecutive Assembly elections. In 2021, he retained the seat with a margin of more than 21,000 votes, reinforcing his grassroots strength.

A close loyalist of former Chief Minister K Karunakaran, Satheesan steadily built his position within the Congress organisation and later served as AICC secretary and KPCC vice-president. He earned recognition for his detailed understanding of governance and financial matters, often raising policy-focused arguments inside the Assembly.

He also gained attention for his environmental stand during the Congress-led government years. Satheesan was among the group of legislators known as the “Green MLAs", who supported the Madhav Gadgil Committee recommendations aimed at protecting the Western Ghats.

His biggest political breakthrough came in 2021, when the Congress leadership appointed him as the Leader of the Opposition following the UDF’s Assembly poll defeat. Since then, he has emerged as one of the sharpest critics of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and the LDF government. His data-backed criticism and confrontational political style often dominated Kerala’s political discourse over the past five years.

Under his leadership, the UDF recorded strong performances in bypolls, local body elections and Lok Sabha elections, setting the stage for its resurgence in the 2026 Assembly polls.
