Veteran politician and TVK leader JCD Prabhakar has been elected Speaker of the Tamil Nadu Assembly, becoming one of the most important institutional faces of Chief Minister Vijay’s first government. While TVK’s rise has largely been associated with Vijay’s star power and political momentum, the choice of Prabhakar signals something different – experience, procedural knowledge, and old-school legislative politics at the heart of a first-time government.
For decades, JCD Prabhakar has been a familiar face in Tamil Nadu politics, a leader who has seen governments rise and fall, power centres shift, and parties reinvent themselves.
For many younger voters, Prabhakar may appear as a relatively low-profile choice compared to the star power surrounding TVK. But within Tamil Nadu’s political circles, his appointment is being viewed as a carefully calculated decision: pick someone who understands the Assembly inside out at a time when a first-time ruling party is learning the ropes of governance.
Who Is JCD Prabhakar?
JCD Prabhakar’s political journey stretches back to the MGR era. He first entered the Assembly in 1980 as an AIADMK MLA from Villivakkam and later remained part of the party’s organisational machinery through the Jayalalithaa years.
Unlike many headline-grabbing leaders, Prabhakar built his career quietly, through constituency work, party structure, and legislative experience. Over time, he earned the image of being an old-school Chennai politician with deep connections across political camps.
Even after setbacks and periods away from the limelight, he stayed relevant within Tamil Nadu politics. That long experience is now proving valuable in an Assembly that is expected to witness sharp confrontations between the ruling TVK and opposition benches.
Why Vijay picked him
Prabhakar’s move to Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) earlier this year raised eyebrows because it signalled TVK’s attempt to bring experienced political operators into a party largely built around Vijay’s mass appeal.
His candidature from Thousand Lights itself carried symbolic weight. The constituency has long been politically significant in Chennai, and fielding a veteran there suggested TVK wanted credibility along with electoral strength.
Now, by elevating him as Speaker, Vijay appears to be sending another message: while TVK may be a new political force, the government wants seasoned hands handling the Assembly’s functioning.
The Speaker’s role in Tamil Nadu is never merely ceremonial. The person occupying the chair often becomes central during political flashpoints, from opposition protests and walkouts to disputes over procedure and party strength.
A Bridge Between Two Political Eras
In many ways, JCD Prabhakar represents a bridge between Tamil Nadu’s old Dravidian political culture and its emerging post-DMK-versus-AIADMK phase.
He belongs to the generation shaped by MGR and Jayalalithaa-era politics, yet now finds himself helping run the Assembly under an actor-turned-Chief Minister trying to redefine the state’s political landscape.
For TVK, that institutional memory could become crucial.
Because while Vijay’s rise may have energised voters, running the Assembly requires a very different skill set — patience, procedural understanding, negotiation, and political balance. Those are qualities Prabhakar is believed to bring to the table.
The challenge ahead
His tenure as Speaker is unlikely to be an easy one.
Tamil Nadu politics remains deeply polarised, and the Assembly is expected to witness aggressive opposition attacks as parties reposition themselves after the 2026 election verdict. Managing disruptions while maintaining neutrality will test even experienced legislators.
JCD Prabhakar’s elevation marks something larger than an individual appointment. It reflects how Tamil Nadu’s political transition is unfolding – with a new ruling force leaning on veterans of the old system to steady the ship.
