The 17th Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly has been convened for its first session on Monday at 9.30 am in the Assembly chamber at the State Secretariat, according to an official government release issued on Sunday.

Newly elected legislators will take the oath or make an affirmation during the inaugural sitting. Members have been instructed to carry their election certificates while presenting themselves for the swearing-in, the release said.

The election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the House has been scheduled for Tuesday at 9.30 am.

The development comes a day after Joseph Vijay was sworn in as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on Sunday.

Though his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), fell short of a majority on its own in the 234-member Assembly, Vijay secured the support of the Congress, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), CPI, CPI(M) and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) to muster the backing of 120 MLAs, crossing the majority mark of 118.

Soon after assuming office, the chief minister announced three public welfare initiatives focusing on electricity supply, women’s safety and eradication of drugs in the state.
