Tamil Nadu Govt Formation: TVK’s Vijay has moved closer to forming the government in Tamil Nadu after dramatic post-poll negotiations brought the Congress, Left parties and VCK behind the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.

The 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election produced a fractured verdict, with TVK emerging as the single-largest party after winning 108 seats in the 234-member House. However, the party remained 10 seats short of the majority mark of 118, triggering intense political negotiations across the state.

The first breakthrough for Vijay came when the Indian National Congress, which won five seats in Tamil Nadu, extended support to TVK despite its long-standing alliance with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). Reports suggested the support came with the understanding that TVK would not align with the BJP.

The major turning point came after the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, CPI and CPI(M) also decided to back Vijay. VCK secured two seats in the election, while CPI and CPI(M) won two seats each. Their support helped the TVK-led bloc inch closer to the majority mark in Tamil Nadu.

Despite securing the required numbers, Vijay’s path to the Chief Minister’s chair in Tamil Nadu has not been entirely smooth. Governor Rajendra Arlekar reportedly asked TVK to submit proof of majority support before formally inviting the party to form the government. Vijay has met the Governor multiple times in recent days to stake claim.

The political uncertainty deepened after speculation emerged over possible efforts by the DMK and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam to prevent TVK from taking power, although the DMK later denied reports of any alliance talks.

With Congress, VCK and the Left eventually backing Vijay, TVK has now almost crossed its biggest political hurdle in its first-ever Tamil Nadu Assembly election.
