The Telangana government has decided to continue Intermediate admissions for the 2026–27 academic year under the existing system. The Chief Minister’s Office issued an official statement confirming the decision.

Based on the recent Telangana Education Commission’s report, the state government had been considering merging Intermediate education with the school education system and had initiated preliminary groundwork for the reform. However, due to limited time before the commencement of admissions and several technical and administrative challenges involved in implementing the merger, the proposal has been temporarily deferred.

The Education Commission had earlier recommended replacing the separate Intermediate system with a Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE)-style structure consisting of Classes 11 and 12. The commission noted that such a model could significantly reduce student dropout rates. While most states in India and the CBSE follow the 11th and 12th class system, Telangana currently maintains a separate Intermediate education framework.

The government had also observed that a large number of students studying in government schools up to Class 10 were not enrolling in separate Intermediate colleges afterward. In view of this, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy had instructed officials to explore the possibility of integrating Intermediate education into the school system as Classes 11 and 12. The Telangana Education Commission echoed the same recommendation in its report.

Following these developments, the Intermediate Board released the admission schedule on May 4, but withdrew it the very next day, triggering concern among students and parents. Subsequently, the Chief Minister conducted a review meeting with MP Vem Narender Reddy, Chief Secretary Ramakrishna Rao, Principal Secretary Sheshadri, Special Secretary Ajith Reddy, and Education Commissioner Yogita Rana.

During the meeting, officials concluded that the merger process requires a more detailed examination of the technical and structural issues involved, leading to the decision to postpone it for the time being.

The Chief Minister directed officials to hold extensive consultations with stakeholders regarding the proposed changes.

He also asked the committee constituted to draft Telangana’s education policy to conduct a detailed study and submit a report. A final decision on the matter will be taken after discussions in the State Legislative Assembly, he said. Meanwhile, the government clarified that Intermediate admissions for the current academic year will proceed as usual.
