Star Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios has pointed out that Jannik Sinner was the No. 1 player in the world when he tested positive for doping, and since he is a talented player who is going to carry the sport for the next decade alongside Carlos Alcaraz, the ATP is protecting him from the doping charges.
Sinner tested positive for clostebol, a banned substance, on two occasions in March 2024. However, the results were only made public in August, raising questions over the transparency of the process.
Now Kyrgios has accused the ATP of protecting Sinner during his doping scandal.
“He was the number one player in the world [when he tested positive] and there is no doubt he is an incredible player and he is going to be carrying the sport for the next 10 to 15 years with Alcaraz," Kyrgios said while speaking on the UNSCRIPTED by Josh Mansour podcast.
“So I mean obviously, they are protecting him (Sinner) to some degree. I mean, the CEO and all of the important people in the ATP are all Italian. And like the whole story for me is bulls–t," Kyrgios said.
Earlier this year, Sinner received a three-month doping ban after settling with the World Anti-Doping Agency.
The ban was a compromise that resolved a complex case in which Sinner had twice tested positive for a banned substance in March 2024 but was cleared of fault by an independent tribunal.
“When all is said and done, he (Sinner) will be one of the best players to ever play. I played against him and it was an incredibly close match and I was like, ‘This kid’s going to be f***king unbelievable," Kyrgios added.
The star Australian player and Sinner took on each other in 2022 for their Round of 16 encounter at the ATP Masters 1000 Miami and the latter went on to win the match.
Sinner was last seen in action at the Shanghai Masters, where he gave a walkover to Tallon Griekspoor in their Round of 32 match.
