I made a little experiment this weekend, separating the “hints” post and the “answer” post into two separate posts but I don’t really think it’s worth the hassle or making you fine Wordlers click an extra link just to avoid spoilers and trim this guide down.

BRAIN was a bad opening guess, which should teach us, children, never to use our brains. That would be rather against the grain of prevailing culture and politics, I should think. If, for instance, you were to use your BRAIN you would likely have very little CLOUT and you’d be very lucky indeed to guess your Wordle on guess #3 even with a lucky REPLY.

The Bot and I each get 1 point for guessing in three and 0 for tying. Our July totals bump forward:

How To Play Competitive Wordle

• Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
• If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
• Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—positive or negative.
• You can keep a running tally or just play day-by-day. Enjoy!

Today’s Wordle Etymology

“Reply” comes from Old French replier, meaning “to answer” or literally “to fold back,” from Latin replicare (“to fold back, repeat, or respond”), formed from re- (“back”) + plicare (“to fold”). The idea is of a response that “folds back” toward the original statement.
