Donald Trump has announced a temporary three-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, raising hopes of a possible breakthrough in the ongoing conflict that has continued for years. Along with the ceasefire announcement, Trump also confirmed that both countries would carry out a major prisoner exchange involving 1000 prisoners each.
According to Trump, the ceasefire will remain in effect on May 9, 10 and 11. The dates coincide with Russia’s Victory Day celebrations, an important national event marking the Soviet Union’s victory in World War II. Trump also acknowledged Ukraine’s role in the war, saying the country was an important contributor and factor during World War II as well.
In his statement, Trump said all 'kinetic activity' between the two sides would be suspended during the ceasefire period, indicating a pause in military operations and active combat. He added that the agreement was reached after he personally requested both sides to consider the temporary halt in fighting.
Trump thanked Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy for agreeing to the proposal. He suggested that the development could become the first major step toward ending the prolonged and deadly conflict.
The announcement also included details of a large prisoner swap between the two countries. Under the arrangement, Russia and Ukraine are expected to exchange 1,000 prisoners each, making it one of the biggest prisoner exchanges since the war began. Prisoner swaps have taken place multiple times during the conflict, but exchanges of this scale are relatively rare and are often seen as confidence-building measures during negotiations.
Trump further stated that discussions aimed at ending the war are continuing and claimed that progress is being made each day. He described the Russia-Ukraine conflict as the biggest global conflict since World War II and expressed optimism that both sides are moving closer to a larger resolution.
The war between Russia and Ukraine has had widespread geopolitical and economic consequences across the world, impacting global energy markets, food supply chains, and international relations. While previous ceasefires and peace talks have struggled to hold, the latest announcement has once again brought attention to diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions and finding a long-term solution to the conflict.
