UP has approved a Rs 425.50 crore plan to buy 250 electric buses for UPSRTC, alongside four new expressway projects worth Rs 47,000 crore.
The state Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, cleared the decision on Tuesday. Here’s how the money splits up.
The state government will put in Rs 400 crore during the 2026-27 financial year. The remaining Rs 25.50 crore will come from UPSRTC itself. Finance Minister Suresh Khanna confirmed the numbers while briefing reporters after the meeting.
The new fleet isn’t just one type of bus either. It includes 100 air-conditioned buses that seat 50 people and 150 slightly smaller ones that seat 42, all 12 metres long.
When buying them, the state says it will give preference to manufacturers based in UP itself, which should also give a small boost to local industry.
These buses will run on major city, religious and tourist routes, cutting into UPSRTC’s heavy reliance on diesel vehicles. There’s a practical deadline behind this push too.
From November 1 this year, only CNG, electric or BS-VI compliant vehicles will be allowed to enter Delhi, under rules set by the Commission for Air Quality Management. Without cleaner buses, UPSRTC risks disruption to its routes into the National Capital Region.
Right now, UPSRTC runs somewhere between 13,000 and 14,300 diesel and CNG buses. It already has more than 700 electric buses working across 17 municipal corporations, so this order builds on an existing shift rather than starting one.
The same Cabinet meeting also cleared four expressway projects, including the Agra-Lucknow-Purvanchal Link and the 333-km Vindhya Expressway, together worth more than Rs 47,000 crore, as part of a broader push to improve road connectivity across the state.
