Activist Sonam Wangchuk ended his 26-day long indefinite hunger strike after Union Ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh met him at Medanta Hospital late Thursday evening, giving the government’s assurance that his demands would be met.
However, online party Cockroach Janta Party has said that peaceful protest will continue at Jantar Mantar. “We are relieved and grateful that Sonam sir has ended his hunger strike after 26 days,” Abhijeet Dipke, the founder of the CJP, said in a social media post.
“Thank you, sir, for your extraordinary courage and sacrifice. By putting your own life on the line, you awakened the conscience of an entire nation. Your life is far too precious to this country. The Cockroach Janta Party’s peaceful protest at Jantar Mantar will continue until Dharmendra Pradhan resigns,” he made it clear on X.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has been spear heading his government’s effort to end the agitation by students and Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), said that Wangchuk should take care of his health and regain weight he lost during the fast. “I urge Sonam ji to follow his routine as per the doctors’ advice and regain his former weight as soon as possible,” he wrote on the social media platform.
“I pray to the Almighty for Sonam ji’s good health,” read his text on the X.
Before that Modi posted a video on the social media on Thursday night, announcing that a tough new law was on its way to deal with examination paper leaks. The Cabinet will clear in its meeting on Friday, he stated adding that he has already got a draf of the legislation.
In the video, he stated that “Friends, I am well aware that the issue of paper leaks is not a small matter. It causes immense distress to lakhs of students and their parents. Consequently numerous measures have been taken in the past two-and-half-months following these incidents, and culprits have been apprehended and are currently in jail.” He also stated that how government utilisted all the resources to conduct re-test of NEET examination after the paper leak.
Wangchuk himself announced end of his fast on the social media and said “This was done after a long negotiation on various conditions and in view of possible violence in the country.”
“Just now in the presence of Union Ministers JP Nadda & Dr. Jitendra Singh and the senior leaders of Apex Body of Leh Ladakh I finally broke my fast after 26 days. Earlier 65 members of parliament from different political parties had visited or signed letters urging me to break the fast. This was done after a long negotiation on various conditions and in view of possible violence in the country,” he posted on X.
He added that, “I will explain the conditions in detail in a separate video very soon. Meanwhile I urge you all to stay very vigilant about not allowing violence of any kind anywhere.”
His wife, Gitanjali J Angmo, who was active on the social media throughout the hospitalisation period, shared updates with reporters defending the peaceful movement. She also gave reasons and health conditions surrounding the end of his fast.
Reading out the government’s assurances to Wangchuk in the presence of his wife Gitanjali Angmo and others at the hospital, Nadda said, “The government is positive on not registering cases against those protesting peacefully at Jantar Mantar in Delhi and those who participated in the march to Parliament on July 20, 2026.”
The Union Health Minister reiterated before him that the government has already assured discussions in Parliament on paper leaks and education reforms for exams.
“Besides, the government is also positively considering suitable compensation for the suicide victims of recent NEET paper leaks,” Nadda added.
Sonam Wangchuk has undertaken multiple high-profile hunger strikes since 2023, with most of them were climate fast in su-zero-conditions in Ladakh for ecological protection and constitutional safeguards.
