A 30-year-old ward boy at the Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial (LLRM) Medical College in Meerut was terminated from his job after he, reportedly in an inebriated state, allegedly tried to refill a four-year-old child’s nebuliser with spirit.

College Principal RC Gupta told the Times of India on Saturday that Avinash Singh was reported in an intoxicated state at the time and had a history of reporting for duty in a drunken state. Fortunately, other staff members noticed Singh’s negligence in time and prevented the spirit from reaching the child.

“He was removed immediately after the matter came to my notice. We have instructed ward in-charges and heads of departments to take action against such staff," said RC Gupta.

Meanwhile, another ward boy said Avinash Singh had a heated verbal argument with the boy’s parents after the incident, prompting staff members to intervene and take him away. He also revealed that Avinash had been removed twice by the ward in charge for negligent work, but he had returned as the principal was not aware of this.

However, no police case was registered against Avinash Singh as the boy’s parents did not file a complaint.

This was the second incident involving misconduct by outsourced staff at the medical college in a week. Last week, two female ward attendants and a ward boy were terminated after they were caught on CCTV assaulting a deaf and mute woman in the ‘lawaris’ (unclaimed) ward, according to TOI.

A disturbing video showed the ward attendants inserting a stick into the mouth of the mentally challenged woman, allegedly following a misunderstanding. “We are very strict about any kind of nuisance in the college or hospital, and we will immediately remove people involved in such acts," said Gupta. No police case was filed in that incident either.
