India’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign got off to a scrappy start with a 29-run win over the USA on Saturday. The match was played at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, which also saw the presence of former India captain Rohit Sharma and the Ambani family.
Television cameras frequently focused on Rohit, who was seated alongside industrialist and IPL franchise owner Mukesh Ambani and his wife, Nita Ambani. In one light-hearted moment, the former Mumbai Indians captain exchanged pleasantries with the couple and was later seen politely declining an offer of tea from Mukesh Ambani.
Here's the video of the instance making rounds on the internet.
Rohit Sharma shares good relations with the Ambanis as he took over the captaincy onus of the Mumbai Indians in 2013 and won the franchise five titles under his leadership tenure, which came to an end in 2023. Rohit is still a valuable asset to MI, and he will be keen to inspire the team to another IPL trophy in 2026.
Suryakumar Yadav wins the match for India
Fresh off a convincing series victory against New Zealand, India were expected to dominate the USA from the outset and post a big total. However, the Monank Patel side fielded brilliantly, and the bowlers implemented their plans to perfection, putting the hosts in serious danger of getting bundled out inside 100 runs.
However, captain Suryakumar Yadav stepped up for the team and led from the front when India were reeling at 77/6 in 13 overs. He smashed a scintillating knock of 84 runs in just 49 deliveries and took India to a competitive total of 161/9 in 20 overs.
Defending a par total, India needed to take wickets from the onset and Mohammed Siraj, who came into the squad in the 11th hour following the injury layoff of Harshit Rana, understood this assignment and provided India the early breakthroughs. Arshdeep Singh also snared a dismissal in the initial overs, leaving USA in a troubled state at 13/3 inside the first four overs. Indian spinners also chipped in brilliantly, which significantly upped the required run rate. USA batters Milind Kumar, Sanjay Krishnamurthi, and Shubham Ranjane displayed the winning intent, but their respective knocks of 30-odd runs could not push USA's total closer to the target. India, in the end, managed to restrict the USA to a total of 132/8 in 20 overs, winning the match by 29 runs.
