The United States is keen on sharply increasing its energy supply to India, as on Thursday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio made a strong pitch for deeper energy cooperation between the two countries.

“We want to sell India as much energy as it will buy,” Rubio said.

In his remarks, Rubio also mentioned Iran. He said the US has made “some progress on Iran.” But at the same time, he called Iran’s proposed toll system in the Strait of Hormuz “unacceptable.”

He warned that this plan could make any deal with the US "unfeasible." These remarks come at a time when the US is actively trying to sell more of its energy, especially Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and crude oil, to countries like India.

India is one of the world's largest energy consumers. It is trying to acquire energy from different countries. The US sees this as a good opportunity to increase trade with India.

Energy cooperation is likely to be an important topic in high-level meetings between the two countries in the coming days, and Rubio's statement might be taken as a prelude.

At the same time, the US is taking a strong stand on Iran and the Strait of Hormuz, which is a very important route for global oil supply. This is significant because India needs steady and varied sources of energy for its fast-growing economy, while the US wants to sell more of its energy in the Indian market.
