PM Narendra Modi urges Indians to cut fuel use amid West Asia tensions, promoting work from home, public transport, EVs, carpooling, less foreign travel and gold buying.

As tensions in West Asia threaten to disrupt global oil supplies and push up prices, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged Indians to make small but meaningful lifestyle changes to reduce fuel consumption and conserve foreign exchange. Speaking at a public event yesterday, the PM said that every citizen can contribute to shielding the economy from the impact of rising crude prices and global uncertainty. His message focused on cutting unnecessary expenses, reducing dependence on imported fuel, and embracing more sustainable habits.

Work From Home Wherever Possible
Recalling practices adopted during the COVID-19 pandemic, PM Modi suggested companies and institutions consider work-from-home arrangements again. As he said, “Think of work from home in the national interest.” Fewer office commutes would reduce petrol and diesel consumption significantly.

Hold Online Meetings and Video Conferences
The Prime Minister also encouraged businesses to minimize travel by switching to virtual meetings. He said, “Meetings can be done through video conferencing.” This would help save both fuel and time.

Use Public Transport Like Metro and Buses
PM Modi urged people to rely more on metros and public buses instead of private vehicles. According to him, “Use metro and public transport as much as possible.” This is one of the easiest ways for urban commuters to cut fuel usage.

Carpool More Often
For those who need to drive, sharing rides can reduce the number of vehicles on the road. The Prime Minister appealed to citizens to adopt carpooling as a regular habit to save fuel and reduce congestion.

Choose Electric Vehicles
PM Modi encouraged people to switch to electric vehicles whenever possible. With EVs becoming more accessible, they offer a long-term solution to reduce dependence on imported crude oil.

Postpone Non-Essential Foreign Travel
To conserve foreign exchange, PM Modi suggested delaying overseas vacations and destination weddings for the next year. He said people should consider “postponing foreign travel for one year.” This would help reduce outflow of precious foreign currency.

Cut Back on Gold Purchases
India imports large quantities of gold each year, putting pressure on foreign exchange reserves. The Prime Minister urged citizens to avoid unnecessary gold purchases during this period.

Move Goods by Rail Instead of Road
PM Modi suggested that industries and logistics companies shift freight movement to railways wherever feasible. Rail transport is more fuel-efficient than road transport and can significantly reduce diesel consumption.

Use Petrol, Diesel and Gas with Great Restraint
Summing up his message, PM Modi said, “Need of the hour is to use petrol, diesel and gas with great restraint.” He stressed that conserving energy resources is a national responsibility during times of global crisis.
