Suvendu Adhikari, who will succeed Mamata Banerjee as the Chief Minister of West Bengal, had declared a net worth of Rs 85.87 lakh in his election affidavit.

Suvendu Adhikari made history with his appointment as West Bengal’s first BJP Chief Minister. Once a close aide of TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee, Adhikari emerged as her fiercest political rival and justified the appointment by defeating her in her stronghold of Bhabanipur in the recent elections.

In 2011, Adhikari played a crucial role in bringing TMC to power after 34 years of Left rule in Bengal. 15 years later, he now stands at the centre of the BJP’s historic victory to end Mamata Banerjee’s reign. The BJP secured 207 seats, while the TMC was pushed back to just 80 seats.

After chairing a meeting of party workers in Kolkata, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced Adhikari as the upcoming Chief Minister. “I announce the name of Suvendu Adhikari elected as Leader of West Bengal BJP Legislative Party," he said.

When Will Adhikari Take Oath?

Adhikari, 55, is set to take oath on Saturday (May 9), which is significant as it is also the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, BJP Bengal president Samik Bhattacharya and other top leaders are expected to attend.

West Bengal Governor RN Ravi on Thursday dissolved the Legislative Assembly, clearing the way for the BJP’s first government in the state after Mamata Banerjee refused to resign, citing allegations of vote theft.

Suvendu Adhikari’s Net Worth

In his election affidavit before contesting the two-phased Assembly polls, Suvendu Adhikari declared a net worth of Rs 85.87 lakh. This includes Rs 24.57 lakh in movable assets and Rs 61.30 lakh in immovable assets.

In his movable assets, Adhikari declared that he has Rs 12,000 in cash. The first BJP Chief Minister doesn’t own a car or any other private vehicle, as per the affidavit. Neither does the BJP leader own any gold jewellery.

Adhikari has bank deposits across 14 accounts, including PNB, SBI, Axis Bank, IDBI Bank, and several cooperative banks in Contai and Nandigram. He has multiple investments, such as Rs 5.45 lakh in National Savings Certificates and Rs 2.60 lakh in Kisan Vikas Patras, a postal savings scheme. He has six LIC insurance policies worth Rs 7.71 lakh.

Most of Adhikari’s immovable assets are in Purba Medinipur, which has been his family’s political stronghold for decades. He owns agricultural land in Nandigram worth Rs 9.05 lakh, along with agricultural plots in Panchdaria, Dharmadasbar, Karkuli, and Sinachurajalpai worth Rs 27.5 Lakh

He has also declared three residential properties, including flats in Tamluk and Kumarpur and a jointly held ancestral property in Karkuli, worth Rs 24.75 lakh. According to his 2024-25 Income Tax Return, Adhikari declared an annual income of Rs 17.38 lakh.

Criminal Cases

Adhikari currently has 29 criminal cases pending against him, ranging from promoting enmity between groups, criminal intimidation, defamation, and theft. He is also named in a 2017 CBI case under the Prevention of Corruption Act and the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. No charges have been framed in any of the 29 cases, per the affidavit.

What Was Mamata Banerjee’s Net Worth?

As compared to Suvendu’s net worth, outgoing CM Mamata Banerjee’s affidavit declared total assets of Rs 15 lakh, with zero liabilities. Banerjee declared Rs 75,000 in cash and Rs 12.76 lakh in two bank accounts, along with 9.75 grams of gold jewellery valued at Rs 1.45 lakh.

Banerjee’s affidavit showed that she did not own any vehicle, agricultural and non-agricultural land, or any residential property on record. Her declared income sources are royalty and interest, with an annual income of Rs 23.21 lakh in 2024-25, as compared to Suvendu Adhikari’s Rs 17.38 lakh.

Suvendu Adhikari’s Education

Suvendu Adhikari completed his schooling from Contai High School in Purba Medinipur and achieved a Bachelor of Arts (BA) from Pravat Kumar College. He completed his Masters of Arts (MA) from Kolkata’s Rabindra Bharati University in 2011.

He began his political career in Congress during the 1995 municipal elections. He joined the Trinamool Congress (TMC) with his father, Sisir Adhikari, in 2000, two years after Mamata Banerjee formed the party.
