The race for Kerala’s next chief minister may have entered its most decisive phase. After the Congress-led United Democratic Front’s sweeping victory in the 2026 Assembly elections, the party high command is expected to finalise its chief ministerial face by Sunday. While party MLAs VD Satheesan and Ramesh Chennithala remain strong contenders, the momentum inside the Congress increasingly appears to be shifting towards KC Venugopal.

Reports emerging from the Congress Legislature Party consultations suggest that a majority of newly elected MLAs may have backed him during discussions with AICC observers. Sources say 43 out of 63 newly elected Congress MLAs are backing AICC general secretary (Organisation) Venugopal for the top post.

Who Is KC Venugopal?

For many outside Kerala, Venugopal is known as one of the most powerful organisational figures in the Congress high command and a close aide of Rahul Gandhi. But within Kerala politics, he represents something more significant at this moment: a leader who combines electoral experience, Delhi-level influence, organisational control and relatively low factional baggage in a party long defined by internal rivalries.

Born in Kannur district in 1963, KC Venugopal began his political journey through the student movement. Like many Congress leaders from Kerala, he rose through the ranks of the Kerala Students Union (KSU) and later the Youth Congress. His early political years were shaped by organisational work rather than television visibility, and that reputation as a backroom strategist has stayed with him throughout his career.

Venugopal first entered the Kerala Assembly in 1996 from the Alappuzha constituency and retained the seat in 2001 and 2006, establishing himself as a strong Congress face in coastal Kerala. He later transitioned to national politics, winning the Alappuzha Lok Sabha seat in 2009 and again in 2014 before moving to the Rajya Sabha in 2020. In 2024, he returned to the Lok Sabha from Alappuzha once more.

During the second UPA government led by Manmohan Singh, Venugopal served as Minister of State for Civil Aviation. Though not among the cabinet’s most high-profile ministers, he earned a reputation inside the party as a disciplined and dependable administrator.

Venugopal’s Rise In The Congress

His real rise, however, came after the Congress lost power nationally. As Rahul Gandhi reshaped the party organisation, Venugopal emerged as one of his most trusted political managers. He became AICC General Secretary (Organisation), effectively handling the Congress party machinery across states, candidate coordination, internal communication and election management. Within Congress circles, the role is considered one of the most influential after the party president.

That organisational stature is now becoming a major factor in Kerala.

Unlike Satheesan, who has built his identity as an aggressive opposition leader against the outgoing Left government, or Chennithala, who represents an older Congress generation, Venugopal is being seen as a consensus figure capable of balancing Kerala’s complex Congress factions while also maintaining direct access to the national leadership.

This matters because Kerala Congress politics has historically been driven by powerful camps and personality clashes. The Congress high command often looks for leaders who can prevent factional wars from destabilising the government. Venugopal’s supporters argue that his years in Delhi have given him the authority and networks to manage competing interests more effectively than most state leaders.

Another reason for his growing edge is the perception that he helped architect the Congress comeback in Kerala after a decade of Left rule. Though the campaign had multiple faces, sections within the party view Venugopal as one of the key strategists behind the UDF’s massive performance, where the alliance won 102 seats and the Congress alone secured 63.

The support equations are also becoming increasingly important. Reports indicate that a large section of Congress MLAs privately favoured Venugopal during consultations with AICC observers Ajay Maken and Mukul Wasnik. At the same time, the Indian Union Muslim League has reportedly shown greater comfort with VD Satheesan, creating a delicate balancing act for the high command.

The Challenges

Critics within the Congress argue that he has spent too many years in Delhi and lacks the day-to-day connection with Kerala’s grassroots politics that leaders like Satheesan possess. Others worry that appointing a leader so closely identified with the high command could revive debates over Delhi control in Kerala Congress affairs.

There is also the practical question of transition. If Venugopal becomes chief minister, he would likely have to resign as MP from Alappuzha and step away from his powerful organisational role in the Congress at the national level. That would trigger another reshuffle inside the party structure.

Yet, at this moment, the political momentum appears to favour him.

The Congress Legislature Party has already authorised the high command to take the final call, following the party’s traditional practice.

For the Congress, the Kerala decision is bigger than just choosing a chief minister. After years of setbacks nationally, Kerala has become one of the party’s most important power centres. The choice of CM will shape not only governance in the state but also the Congress party’s future internal balance.
