Pieter Elbers is the former CEO of IndiGo who resigned on March 10, three months after the country’s largest airline faced massive operational disruptions and its worst crisis.

A veteran of the aviation industry, he spent 30 years at KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, rising from an aircraft loading supervisor to President and CEO, before joining IndiGo in September 2022.

Sept 2022 to March 2026: His tenure at IndiGo

Initially, Elbers’ tenure was marked by significant growth and international expansion.

Under his leadership, IndiGo’s domestic market share grew from 57% to 66% by late 2025. He spearheaded aggressive international growth, aiming for 40 international destinations by early 2026. He oversaw a record-breaking order of 500 aircraft in 2023.

He was elected as the Chair of the IATA Board of Governors in June 2024.

December 2025 to March 2026: The turbulence and worst crisis at IndiGo

The “turbulence" refers to a massive operational collapse in December 2025 that eventually led to his resignation.

In early December 2025, IndiGo cancelled over 1,800 flights in a single week, including more than 1,000 in one day (December 5). The crisis was triggered by new DGCA Flight Duty Time Limitation (FDTL) rules, which mandated stricter rest periods for pilots.

The DGCA granted a one-time exemption from specific night duty rules to stabilise operations.

Operations began to stabilise by December 10, 2025, after the airline processed over ₹610 crores in refunds.

What caused the disruption? Who was to blame?

The disruption was attributed to a compounding of factors, including new flight duty time rules and internal system failures. Thousands of passengers were stranded, leading to widespread public backlash.

Union Civil Aviation Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu stated that the airline’s “gross mismanagement" of internal crew rosters and pilot utilisation was the sole cause of the massive flight cancellations.

The DGCA issued show-cause notices to CEO Pieter Elbers and other top officials, including the COO and Director of Flight Operations, for failing to ensure reliable operations. The DGCA’s inquiry committee concluded the crisis resulted from “over-optimisation of operations," inadequate regulatory preparedness, and a lack of operational buffers.

The crisis resulted in a 78% decline in quarterly profit (approx. ₹577 crore impact). Former employees also alleged a “toxic culture" and systemic overwork contributed to the meltdown.

What next?

Managing Director Rahul Bhatia assumed interim management of the airline.

“Rahul returns to assume management of the affairs of the airline to strengthen the company’s Culture, reinforce operational excellence and deepen its commitment to delivering exceptional service of care, reliability and professionalism to its customers," InterGlobe Aviation’s Chairman Vikram Singh Mehta said in the press release.
