Actor-turned-politician Vijay, who has now taken oath as Tamil Nadu chief minister after the recent elections, is known across the country as “Thalapathy" Vijay.

What began as a marketing title in a 1994 film has now turned into a political reality. Vijay is no longer just the “Commander" of the box office, but the commander of the state’s governance and even politics at this point.

While many know how former India captain and Chennai Super Kings legend MS Dhoni earned the nickname “Thala" from fans, fewer know how Vijay came to be called “Thalapathy", though his real name is C Joseph Vijay.

The story behind the title is one of the most successful branding exercises in Indian cinema — a screen identity that evolved into a mass political image.

Who First Called Vijay ‘Thalapathy’?

Vijay made his debut as a lead actor with Naalaiya Theerpu in 1992 at the age of 18. A few years later, his father and filmmaker S.A. Chandrasekhar introduced him as “Ilaya Thalapathy" — meaning “Young Commander" — to position him as a rising mass hero in Tamil cinema.

The title was first used in the opening credits of Vijay’s 1994 film Rasigan. At the time, the title “Thalapathy" was popularly associated with DMK veteran M. Karunanidhi and superstar Rajinikanth.

Over the years, the “Ilaya" prefix gradually disappeared as Vijay’s popularity grew. By the time Mersal was released in 2017, director Atlee dropped “Ilaya" in the title card, marking Vijay’s transition to the singular, more powerful “Thalapathy."

What Does ‘Thalapathy’ Mean?

The word “Thalapathy" means “Commander" or “Leader" and carries strong cinematic and political symbolism in Tamil Nadu.

The term gained wider popularity in Tamil cinema after Mani Ratnam’s 1991 cult film Thalapathi, starring Rajinikanth.

Over time, the title became inseparable from Vijay’s public image. Several of his films were unofficially referred to using “Thalapathy" branding, including projects temporarily called Thalapathy 66 and Thalapathy 67 before their official titles were announced.

Now, with Vijay entering active politics through Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and becoming chief minister, “Thalapathy" has evolved beyond a fan title into a full-fledged political identity in Tamil Nadu.
