Synopsis
Chennai-based mutual fund distributor Muthukrishnan Dhandapani, who manages Rahul Gandhi’s investments, says he stopped taking new clients a decade ago—a choice that may have cost him a tenfold rise in income. “After 2017, I thought enough and decided to retain only existing clients. Many well-to-do people persisted with me to take them as clients. I can definitely earn 10 times more...become the largest individual distributor in the country. I said no. I've decent wealth and let it grow. That's good enough,” the widely-followed AMFI-registered mutual fund distributor wrote in a post on X.
Muthukrishnan started his mutual fund distribution business back in 2007 and stopped taking in new clients in 2017. “I've stopped adding clients for the last 10 years. Believe it or not, I'm extremely content with what life has given me,” he said in response to a X user who claimed that he may get more clients after revealing that he handles Rahul Gandhi’s investments.
No favours, No requests
Dhandapani added that some mutual fund distributors have asked him how to deal with VIP clients. He advised that they should just stick to the professional process and interact nicely, be it Rahul Gandhi or any other VIP client. "I've interacted with Rahul lot of times in the last 14 years. I've never sought anything, even a smallest benefit from him. I'll stick to professional discussion. Then we'll sometimes chat about general things for a while," he said.
The mutual fund distributor added that if a person wants to be respected and treated as equal, then he should not expect anything from anyone, more so with powerful people. He said that this is possible if the person believes that he will get what he is destined to.

In 2013, my client who was professionally working for Rahul Gandhi…
Rahul Gandhi on Sunday took to X for a witty reply to Dhandapani’s long post, in which the financial planner praised the Congress leader's ability to differentiate professional service and political beliefs. “I've been a strong Modi supporter from 2014 to 2024. Never once Rahul or his office staff brought that subject to me. I believe my tweets are regularly seen by his staff. They clearly differentiate between my professional service and political beliefs. And in every single conversation I've with Rahul, he addresses me with respect and never behaved in any haughty manner. Despite knowing my BJP support, he took my input few years ago for choosing a key professional,” Dhandapani had written in his post on X.

He claimed that mainstream media and IT cells of parties can make someone look completely inhuman, adding that Rahul Gandhi respects professionals and seems to be a nice human being to interact with.
Rahul Gandhi's reponse
After his post attracted strong responses from BJP and Congress supporters, Rahul Gandhi took to X to reply, “Muthu ji, your political views are your own - but please do speed up the returns on my investments.”
Dhandapani, in return, said that he is “pleasantly surprised” with the opposition leader’s response.
