Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday departed for a two-day official visit to Malaysia at the invitation of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
In his departure statement, PM Modi said he looks forward to meeting his Malaysian counterpart and strengthening ties between the two countries.
He noted that relations between India and Malaysia have steadily improved in recent years and said discussions will aim to further advance the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. According to the Prime Minister, both sides will work towards deeper defence and security cooperation, stronger economic and innovation partnerships and collaboration in new sectors.
The Prime Minister also said he was keen to interact with the Indian community in Malaysia, which numbers nearly three million people and is among the largest Indian diasporas in the world. He described the community as a strong bridge connecting the two nations.
“At the invitation of my friend, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, I will be visiting Malaysia, a nation with which India’s ties are deep-rooted and extensive. This visit will boost our Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and enhance cooperation across sectors," he wrote on X.
“Malaysia is home to a vibrant Indian diaspora. Looking forward to today’s community programme in Kuala Lumpur, where I will get an opportunity to interact with our diaspora," he added.

The visit, scheduled for February 7–8, will include bilateral talks between the two leaders. This is PM Modi’s third visit to Malaysia and his first since the relationship was elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in August 2024.
Officials indicated that defence cooperation will be a major focus area. India is exploring opportunities including the sale of Dornier aircraft and maintenance support for Scorpene submarines and Su-30 aircraft.
The Prime Minister is also expected to meet business leaders along with members of the diaspora during the trip.
