NEET Protest: Mumbai Police has ordered an inquiry and removed a police driver from his current posting after a viral video allegedly showed him threatening student protesters with a fabricated drug case if they participated in demonstrations again.

The video, purportedly recorded inside a police van carrying detained students after Wednesday’s protests over the alleged NEET paper leak, shows the uniformed constable warning the protesters against returning to the agitation.

“If I see you again at the protest, I will put 50 grams of powder in your pocket. Then your life will be ruined," the policeman can be heard saying in the video. He is further heard saying that they wouldn’t be able to secure bail and would have to “rot in jail". To this, the student protesters, seated in the rear seat of the vehicle, are seen giggling.

Taking cognisance of the viral clip, Mumbai Police said it has launched an inquiry into the authenticity and circumstances surrounding the incident. As per news reports, the constable seen in the video has been removed from his current posting. Officials said further disciplinary action will be decided based on the findings of the probe.

Additionally, the video was shared by the Mumbai Congress on X, which alleged that the police were threatening students with false drug cases to deter them from protesting. The party said that if the allegations were true, they represented “a direct attack on democratic rights."

The video surfaced on social media platforms amid nationwide protests led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) over alleged irregularities in the NEET examination and demands for educational reforms and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

Mumbai witnessed demonstrations for the third consecutive day on Wednesday as students, activists and political parties protested over alleged examination irregularities and the police action against protesters in Delhi.

According to police, 13 FIRs have been registered since July 18 in connection with the ongoing protests, with around 400 people booked on charges including unlawful assembly and violation of prohibitory orders.

News agency PTI quoted officials as saying that cases have been registered at different police stations and notices were issued to those named in the FIRs, after which they were allowed to leave.
