Woman sentenced to two years for abandoning new born in hospital

A mobile court on Monday (May 11, 2026) sentenced a woman identified as B. Sai Swathi to two years of imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹5,000 for abandoning a female infant at a private hospital in Eluru. The woman had been admitted to a hospital at S.R. Peta in Eluru in June 2022, where she gave birth to a baby girl. She then escaped from the hospital, leaving the new-born on the bed. Following a complaint, the Eluru Three Town police registered a case and arrested the mother, according to a police release.
