The man in the middle was forced to give out as many as 23 red cards, the most in the history of the game in Brazil, in Cruzeiro's 1-0 win at the Esadio Governador Magalhaes Pito.

The Campeonato Mineiro fixture between Brazilian outfits Cruzeiro and Atletico Mineiro descended into chaos as an all-out brawl that sparked towards the end of the game.

The man in the middle was forced to give out as many as 23 red cards, the most in the history of the game in Brazil, in Cruzeiro’s 1-0 win at the Esadio Governador Magalhaes Pito in Belo Horizante.

Everson, Renan Lodi, Gabriel Delfim, Junior Alonso, Alan Franco, Hulk, Lyanco, Ruan Tressoldi, Alan Minda, Mateo Cassierra and Angelo Preciado were given the marching orders for Mineiro.

While, Cruzeiro had Christian, Fabrício Bruno, Lucas Romero, Kaio Jorge, João Marcelo, Kauã Prates, Lucas Villalba, Cássio, Matheus Henrique, Walace, Fagner and Gerson sent off.

The previous record in Brazil for most red cards in a game was 22, in a 1954 fixture between Portuguesa and Botafogo, and the disorder on Sunday entered unprecedented realms.

The only goal of the game came through Kaio Jorge at the hour mark as Cruzeiro went on to protect their lead.

Tensions flared up when the Mineiro keeper, Everson, seemed to mouth something to a Cruzeiro midfielder, Christian, who was on the ground after the goalie charged in to save a strike. The custodian got in the face of the opponent after tackling him, just as he was about to get up to his feet, and the latter’s teammates barged at the Mineiro shot stopper sparking an all-out brawl.

Former Brazilian team star Hulk, who was also part of the appalling incident, came out and apologised following the conclusion of the game.

“Either you take control of the game, or it’s going to turn into a mess," the Brazilian international said.
