The Telangana’s Anti-Corruption Bureau on Wednesday said it registered a case of Disproportionate Assets against a Divisional Engineer, REDCO, after it uncovered assets with an estimated market value of Rs 100-150 crore during searches conducted against him.

The ACB registered a case against the accused enginner, M Venkat Ramana, alleging that he amassed assets disproportionate to his known sources of income through corrupt practices during his service. Simultaneous searches were carried out at his residence, office and seven other premises linked to his relatives, associates and alleged benamidars.

As the offence is punishable under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018), preliminary searches were conducted on Wednesday at his house, office and seven other places belonging to his relatives, associates and “benamidars", the ACB said.

According to the ACB, assets detected so far have an official value of over Rs 27.65 crore. These include four residential flats, a G+3 commercial building, a G+5 commercial building, bank deposits worth Rs 52.02 lakh, 2.094 kg of gold ornaments, three vehicles, household articles, electronic gadgets and 20 liquor bottles.

Investigators also found that the officer had allegedly invested heavily in the real estate sector through four construction firms registered in his wife’s name. The firms are developing 10 residential apartment projects in Hyderabad with an estimated investment of around Rs 20 crore.

Officials said the market value of the properties is substantially higher than their registered value, with real estate estimates placing the total worth of the assets between Rs 100 crore and Rs 150 crore. Further verification is underway to identify additional properties, investments and financial transactions linked to the accused.

The ACB said Ramana had previously been arrested in a 2019 bribery case for allegedly accepting Rs 25,000 to process an approval file. A charge sheet was filed in that case after cash and gold were recovered during the investigation.
