In a daylight attack in Punjab’s Tarn Taran district, an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) sarpanch was shot dead during a wedding function on Wednesday, sparking fresh outrage over the state’s law and order situation.

According to police and eyewitness accounts, two unidentified motorcycle-borne gunmen suddenly entered the marriage palace where the sarpanch, Harbrinder Singh alias Happy, was attending a ceremony with relatives. Without warning, they opened indiscriminate fire on him from close range, killing him on the spot and critically injuring his cousin, who was rushed to a nearby hospital.

Senior officers reached the scene soon after the incident, cordoned off the area and launched a manhunt for the attackers. Forensic teams are scanning CCTV footage from the venue and surrounding areas as part of the investigation. Police have stated that the motive remains unclear, although preliminary investigations are underway.

The brazen shooting comes amid heightened tensions in the state. It follows several high-profile attacks on politicians in recent weeks, prompting criticism from opposition leaders who have blamed the ruling AAP government for a deteriorating security climate.

BJP leader Jaiveer Shergill condemned the incident on social media, saying, “Another day, another broad daylight murder in Punjab. AAP sarpanch shot dead in a wedding function in Tarn Taran, Punjab! Punjab is witnessing a non-stop naked dance of lawlessness & death!" He demanded action, adding that “Punjab needs to be saved from criminals & AAP!"

Police efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend the accused, and more details are expected as the probe progresses.
