Residents of Vijayawada may soon get relief from chronic traffic congestion, as plans are underway for a 14-km elevated flyover corridor through the city. The proposed six-lane structure will be built along the Hyderabad-Vijayawada-Machilipatnam highway stretch, aiming to streamline traffic movement and reduce bottlenecks in key urban zones.

According to preliminary plans, the elevated corridor will run from the Kanaka Durga flyover near Rajiv Park, close to the Pandit Nehru Bus Stand, all the way to Ganguru Junction on the Machilipatnam route. The Andhra Pradesh government is actively examining the proposal, with the project expected to move forward soon.

Officials believe the six-lane elevated flyover will allow seamless highway travel without interruptions from city-level traffic. By separating long-distance vehicles from local traffic, the project is expected to significantly ease congestion within Vijayawada city limits.

Discussions are currently underway at the Delhi level between the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and state authorities regarding the project’s execution model. The flyover is proposed to pass through key locations including Ibrahimpatnam, Gollapudi, Bhavanipuram, Kanaka Durga flyover, Krishnalanka, Varadhi Junction, Benz Circle, Autonagar Gate, Kanuru, Poranki, Penamaluru and Ganguru.

The development comes as part of the broader expansion of National Highway 65 between Hyderabad and Vijayawada, which is being upgraded from four lanes to six lanes. Initially, the widening project was planned only up to the Vijayawada bypass junction near Gollapudi. However, following a request from the state government, NHAI agreed to extend the expansion up to the Kanaka Durga flyover at Bhavanipuram. A Detailed Project Report (DPR) is currently being prepared.

At the same time, the Vijayawada-Machilipatnam highway is also being widened to six lanes. However, within Vijayawada city limits, certain stretches, particularly from the Kanaka Durga flyover through Krishnalanka, Varadhi Junction, Benz Circle, Kanuru, Poranki, Penamaluru and Ganguru up to the Davuluru toll plaza, would otherwise remain four-lane roads.

Officials raised concerns that leaving this central urban stretch as a four-lane road would create a traffic bottleneck, especially given the high vehicle density in Vijayawada. As a result, authorities have concluded that constructing a six-lane elevated corridor from Kanaka Durga flyover to Ganguru Junction is the most effective long-term solution.

Senior officials have reportedly directed departments to prepare detailed proposals for the elevated corridor to ensure smoother traffic flow and future-proof the city’s highway infrastructure.

If approved and executed as planned, the project could mark one of the most significant urban mobility upgrades for Vijayawada in recent years.
