Two persons were killed and several others, including 48 police personnel, were injured in fresh violence that erupted in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district on Tuesday.

Assam DGP Harmeet Singh on Tuesday said he was attacked by bows and arrows amid the violence that rocked Assam’s trouble-torn Karbi Anglong district. In the clash erupted between two groups today, two persons were killed and at least 48 police personnel got injured.

The agitation prompted security forces to lathi-charge and fire tear gas shells to disperse.

Speaking to reporters, Assam DGP said, “Today, they tried to take over the bridge, and when we tried to stop them, they attacked us. Crude bombs and stones were thrown. I was attacked with bows and arrows… The government is talking to them, and a date has been set for them. The Chief Minister has given them a date, and then the hunger strike was withdrawn. But, they have burnt all the shops, and 48 policemen have been injured until now."

2 Persons Killed

A 25-year-old specially-abled youth, Suresh Dey, and Athik Timung were killed in the violence. The body of Dey was recovered from a building that was set ablaze by the protestors.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared the update on X and wrote, “I am closely monitoring the situation in West Karbi Anglong. It is deeply painful that two persons lost their lives during today’s unrest," he said in a post on X.

Additional security forces will be deployed in Kherani area on Wednesday to maintain peace, he said.

“We are in constant touch with all concerned to restore normalcy and resolve issues through dialogue. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. The government will stand with all affected families and provide all necessary support," Sarma said.
